Description
Genuine birch bark basket from the fur trade era.Unique, rare Native American basket was found in northern Minnesota recently. It would have been made by a Great Lakes Woodland Native American Ojibwe woman.
Basket would have been used to store food and originally would have had a tightly fitted lid. The top rim is made of willow with basswood lacing. The base is flared, signifying a very skilled craftsman. The seams and tightly wrapped rim also signify the skill. This same seam is used in birch bark canoe making. The outside is beautifully decorated with floral embroidery. There are several natural age cracks.
The birch bark is extremely thick, compared to baskets made today or in recent past.
Measures 11.5" high x 11-12" top diameter.
Beautiful piece of history!
Basket will be shipped with insurance.
