Description

Up for bid is a beautifully decorated cobalt blue & gray salt glaze stoneware stein/tankard with an attached pewter lid. Admittedly, I am not an authority on salt glaze steins, so I am only noting what I've been told. It seems that this stein was made in the Westerwald region of Germany, which is known for their salt glaze stoneware. It is adorned with significant floral designs along with two head portraits around the circumference. It also has a framed word on the front "Prolit". This spelling is different than the typical "Prosit" seen on similar steins. However, I realized that during colonial times, an "S" took the shape of an "L". I am not guaranteeing that this stein dates to the colonial period. However, I do believe it is old, based on the fact that there are no markings on the base. Unless this stein was made specifically for the German market, it should be stamped that it was made in Germany, which would have been mandated after 1891.
The top of the lid is also decorated with what looks like a man, monkey, fish and a tankard (see photo). The actual stoneware measures 5 inches tall and has 1/2 L impressed into the rim. Other than a minor nick to the inside rim (cannot be seen with the lid seated), this stein is in very good condition considering its age. It would make a great addition to your collection.
