Description
Late 1800s to early 1900sQuileute
basket from the Quileute people, La Push, coastal Washington State.
The bottom has plaiting with strips of cedar bark that are split into warps up the side of the basket, with the sides woven with twining and strips of cedar bark, some dyed red. The top has a braided and wrapped scalloped rim.
In very good condition, showing some age-related wear (see pictures). The basket is 3 1/2 inches tall (9 cm), with a 6 inch top diameter (15 cm). This is a very nice Quileute basket, with very few existing from this period.
Research Note
: The design elements of this basket are similar to those seen in other Northwest Coast, First Nations Coastal Canada baskets - plaited cedar strip bottom seen in Makah and Nuu-Chah-Nulth (Nootka) baskets, scalloped rim and cedar strips on Haida baskets, Tsimshian baskets woven with cedar bark strips, twining and braided rim.

- shipping at less cost, but, according to the USPS, delivery time “varies” and can sometimes take several weeks. Also, there is no package tracking and shipping insurance is not available.
2. Priority Mail International
- shipping cost is more, but delivery is usually within ten days of shipment. Provides partial insurance coverage and tracking of the shipment through the U.S. Postal system. For more expensive items, we usually require shipping via Priority Mail International and may add the cost of full shipping insurance to the cost of shipping.
Customs:
The customs form we fill out for your shipment is marked “
merchandise
”, with the actual price you paid for the item as the value. We always include a packing slip with your purchase that identifies the item and the actual amount you paid for your purchase. Note: Postal regulations do not allow us to mark your purchase as “
gift
”. Customs fees are not included in the shipping cost and are
the buyer’s responsibility.
