Description

The stein depicted in this auction was made by the A. J. Thewalt firm of Germany.  The stein is pottery, transfer, & relief with a pewter lid, & very nice pewter thumb, & very nice finial.  The stein is in full color and the size is 0.5 L.  The form number is 101.   The name of the stein is a couple in the garden.  On the base is the incised triangle mark with no dot indicating this is the first mark and was made between the years 1893 thru 1896, wow more than 100 years old.  This would make a very nice addition to any collection.
Albert Jac. Thewalt GmbH began producing beer steins circa 1897, and by the start of World War I in 1914 had cataloged some 819 different models. Stein production came to a halt at that
point and wouldn’t be resumed again until after World War II when, under the guiding hand of Albert Jakob Thewalt, grandson of the founder, the company again entered the beer stein
market, producing well over 400 new models before permanently ceasing operations in 2009.
