Wooden Beer Stein
Hand Painted
Children c.1906
Description:
This very old beer stein is made of wood in a very traditional Scandinavian form that was made for centuries.
It was made of turned wood with imitation wicker bands on top and bottom holding it together. The lid is made of wood as well, moving on a wooden hinge.
This is a Scandinavian stein made in Scandinavian tradition - most likely from Sweden - with hand-painted folk-style decorations. The decorations are well-painted and show a boy and a girl in the garden. The girl is holding a large serving beer stein, the boy has a beer glass in his hand pouring beer to the ground. There is probably some symbolism that I just cannot decipher. The inside of the lid is inscribed "Christmas 1906 Eleanor" with some wood burning instrument. Most likely, the stein was brought to the US by some Swedish immigrant in the early 1900s and given as a gift.
The stein conditions are good for a wooden piece of this age. There is no damage or repairs and the stein holds well together. There is some very minimum paint loss consistent with normal wear. It is 9.5" tall, 4" in bottom diameter, around 1 L capacity. Circa late 1890s - early 1900s.
