Description

Antique - Native American Pawnee or Other Plains Tribe 17" Diam x 5 1/4" Deep Coiled Gathering Basket - FINE
Purchased at an
auction in
Oklahoma, t
his is a
round,
supple,
undecorated (no tribal zigzags or stripes, etc.) gathering basket - antique, approximately 100 years old
.
(
We estimate the basket was made in the late 1800s or early 1900s.)
The weave is a clockwise spiral, unusual for Plains Indians - the Pawnee were known to weave their baskets in a clockwise spiral. A tar-like substance, hard not sticky, circles the bottom. The prior owner's tag (
attached
when we bought the basket) shows handwritten description, including: "Hard-Bundle - single stick closely woven - dark brown". Appropriate for decorative rather than practical use due to its age - perhaps best as a wall hanging.
The basket measures approximately 17" in diameter and 5 1/4" deep. W
eight is 1 lb. 13 oz., estimated package weight is 4-5 lbs. Will be thoroughly padded and carefully packed for secure, intact delivery.
