Description
Jeff Torborg spent 40 years in Major League Baseball as a player, coach and manager. He coached with the Yankees from 1980 through 1988, wearing the uniform number "44" from 1984 through 1988. Offered here is a pregame jersey worn by Torborg circa 1984.Manufactured by Wilson, it features their tagging in the neckline. Tagged as a size XL, the garment measures approx. 23-1/2 inches across from pit to pit, and tapers slightly to approx. 22 inches across along the stomach. The length from shoulder to bottom hem is approx. 27-1/2 inches. It is the appropriate size for Torborg, who was around 6 feet tall and 195 pounds during this time. The "NY" logo on front and "44" on back are both sewn on in white. The jersey shows light, consistent wear, but like other Polyester jerseys of the day, has held it's color very well and hasn't faded. There are no rips, holes or tears.
Reggie Jackson wore a similar looking Yankees pregame jersey in 1980-81, but not quite the same. During Reggie's time with the club, everyone wore pregame shirts that had a long, horizontal seam running from sleeve to sleeve (below the neckline and above the NY logo). After Reggie left for the Angels, Torborg was the only person to wear the number 44 until coach Mike Ferrarro wore it in 1990-91. The number was retired for good by the Yankees in 1993.
Nice Yankees pregame jerseys from the mid-1980s are quite hard to find, and this would be a stellar addition to any baseball collection.
