Very rare and original, ca1880’s Monumental Size, Native American Apache Indian, hand woven Wicker Olla / Storage Basket with a wonderful, corn plant, cross and geometric pattern decoration. This outstanding, 19th century Apache Basket measures approx. 20" tall and 19" in diameter at its widest point.
This beautiful and impressive, Apache Olla Basket is tightly hand woven and decorated using willow and devil’s claw with alternating, vertical lanes of triangles and corn plants with crosses around the top edge of the shoulder. This is far and away the largest Apache Olla we have ever had the pleasure to own and it is an impressive display piece.
The Apache Basket offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Apache Wicker Olla / Storage Basket crafted in the 4th quarter of the 19th century. The Basket comes with our “no questions asked” return privilege and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. It is guaranteed to be deemed authentic, original and as described by any qualified third party authentication service.
This very rare and original, ca1880’s Apache Wicker Olla / Storage Basket is in good to very good condition. While this very large and heavy Basket is sound and stable, the base has partially collapsed a very long time ago and the Basket sits at a canted angle as can be seen in the scans below. When we first saw the Basket we actually thought that it might have been woven in this canted form to facilitate access to whatever was stored in its massive interior. However upon examination of the base it is clear that it partially collapsed a very long time ago causing the basket to sit askew. There is some damage at the rim of the Basket and some loss to the weft stitching on the surface most noticeably at the point of the shoulder. The surface is also darkened from decades of use – this was definitely NOT a tourist item but a large storage Basket that has seen much use by its original owners. We have thoroughly enjoyed owning this outstanding artifact and guarantee that the winning bidder will be both pleased and impressed by this monumental Native American Basket!!
